Hi MSM Rotator Supporters,

Please allow me to introduce the successor of MSM Rotator, NOMAD!
It's 20% smaller but 20% stronger than the original MSM Rotator.
We've solved all the incompetence in the Rotator and improved it to NOMAD.

If you come here to buy MSM Rotator for your astrophotography, then I strongly recommend to buy its successor NOMAD, you will be happy with your choice!

How to do polar alignment in the Southern Hemisphere?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"I have friends who have bought star trackers and have never used them to take a photo because they were too complicated to set up! And these are intelligent people. The Move-Shoot-Move is the most compact and easy-to-set-up star tracker I have ever used. From the time I placed it on my tripod to finished alignment was only about two minutes, and within a couple more minutes, I was shooting tracked images of the stars. Now, I have discovered it can do time-lapse movements as well! That will be my next outing..."

Why do we need Move Shoot Move star tracker?

  • The Earth is rotating.
We know our Earth rotates once every 23h 56m4s. Its rotation axis goes through Polaris, and stars are not stationary relative to our Earth.
Just as the below photo shows, the stars circle around Polaris.
how to do polar alignment
  • What happened?
According to the 500 rule, we usually can not expose for more than 25s, often less than15 seconds, which results in:
1. Many faint stars are missing from our photo.
2. Ugly stars trails.
3. Noise ruins our composition.
  • How to expose more than 60 seconds?
The Move Shoot Move tracker rotates at the same speed as the Earth but in the opposite direction. As a result, the stars will be tracked and remain in the viewfinder. Your exposure time can be up to minutes in duration, faint stars will show up in your pictures, star trails will disappear, and a lower ISO helps to reduce noise. Finally, you can get clear, pinpoint photos of stars and the night sky.

  • What's Polar alignment?
The Earth's rotation axis goes almost exactly through Polaris.
So, we need to make the Rotator's rotational axis parallel to the Earth's rotation axis. This is called polar alignment.
  • Is your Polar alignment complicated?
What if I don't know RA, D-dec, and I've never studied astronomy? Can I still do polar alignment?
Don't worry. It's easy-
  • If you know where to find Polaris, aim the laser at Polaris, and polar alignment is accomplished😉.
  • If you don't know where to find Polaris, download a free app, 'Skysafari,' and set it to VR mode. It will spot Polaris when you move your phone around the sky.
  • How to do a polar alignment in the Southern Hemisphere?
It's a similar operation with different stars; here is a tutorial in more detail.
  • If the star is tracked, will the foreground be blurred?
Yes, the foreground will be blurred. Then what do I do about that? Change the shooting sequence.
  1. First, we turn the tracker OFF for a clear foreground shot(your composition).
  2. Then we wait for the ideal stars to appear in our composition, turn the tracker ON, and shoot the tracked stars. Then combine these two pictures to get the final one in Photoshop or other post-processing software.

The laser makes it so easy.

Portable, easy and fun to use. The laser pointer is a relief from a polar scope and the results are excellent.

Compact, Portable, and Accurate

The MSM rotator is a compact, affordable, accurate tracker that meets all the desires I have in this product. I chose the Pro Kit A (Rotator, Wedge, and Polar Scope with Headlamp). All of these pieces are well made, and work exactly as intended. The polar scope illuminator is genius, and it works to illuminate the viewfinder just enough so that it is not too dim and not too bright. Only downside is I which the tracker lasted longer on battery, but it is fully functional even while charging off of an external power source, which eliminates the need for a long battery life anyways. Great product, I will be continuing to use in the future!

MSM Tracker after 3 Years of using

Since I am trekker and an Astrophotographer, heavy trackers wasn't really my thing from the very start, but I had always dreamt of taking tracked shots. MSM essentially fulfilled my that dream! A perfect tracker to take in during long treks with tent and other camping stuffs. It fits perfectly in my bag pack and takes up little space and the weight is also very less. I have been using the tracker for three years now, and complete satisfaction would be an understatement. The milkyway shot which I have attached, taken in a Bortle 2 sky of Himachal Pradesh, India is still my best shot till date, and has been nominated and featured in several international astronomical medium. The Orion shot was taken from my roof top, and I live in Bortle 9 city. Obviously I have stacked multiple images for both of the shots, but still even the single tracked exposures can give you a lot of data. Also if you use a lot of timelapses in your video(astro or non astro), MSM tracker doubles as rotator as well, which essentially means you will get a moving timelapse. Let me chart out pros and cons of this device, for you decide whether you should buy it or not.
Pros :
1. Portable, Light weight, small
2. Very easy to setup, for beginners, contrary to the other trackers which can be extremely difficult to set up for a novice photographer
3. It can used for not only widescape Astrophotography but also Deepsky and Deepscape as well.
4. Cheaper than traditional trackers
5. Comes with a lot of add ons.
6. Extremely easy to polar align, with a bit of practice it can take as quick as 30 seconds.

Cons :
1. Since it's a very small tracker, you can not use an extremely long focal length lens i.e. over 300mm(Although 250mm gives you the best results)
2. Since the tracker is light weight you can not use an extremely heavy lens with it.
3. Even though it is battery powered, it is manual, in the sense of, it can't be used with an computer like other trackers, and you have to Polar align it manually.
4. The shape of the tracker is a bit boxy although the newer "NOMAD" version has fixed the issue.

Final verdict : Whether If you are beginner or pro in Astrophotography, you should go for this variant or the newer NOMAD version blindly, since the NOMAD version improved a lot of aspects of the cons I have mentioned above, but keep in mind, you will loose the Rotator feature.

Ball head

The ball head I purchased works perfectly attaching my Rotator to my camera, I have only tried it out with a lighter 24-70 mm lens and have not attached a heavier 100-400mm zoom lens yet. So far so good and gives me perfect angles and movability
