The origin of the NOMAD Tracker is based on user feedback and our desire to provide the easiest-to-use, most portable, inexpensive star tracker.

Difference between NOMAD and MSM Rotator:

  1. Improved attachment points. The previous manufacturing tolerances were fine for Astro-landscape but deep-sky needs a firmer foundation.

    1. The MSM Rotator, due to its design, required specific weight positioning to keep the ball head secure; this has been completely eliminated.

    2. The laser now screws into the tracker eliminating any chance of wobble.

    3. The industry standard quick-release plate on the bottom is secured in 2 places preventing any twisting of the tracker on its mount.

  2. Improved load capacity.

    1. The hardware has been built to withstand twice the amount of torque as the MSM Rotator.

    2. Where the MSM Rotator was only designed for wide-angle Astro-landscape, the NOMAD has been designed with wide-field deep-sky use in mind.

    3. Availability of an optional counterweight system for more experienced users to go even deeper.

  3. Simplified operation.  By designing and building a device with a narrower focus we were able to make it better while keeping the size down.

    1. One 3-position switch; Northern hemisphere, Southern, or Off.

    2. In order to improve on our goals of ease of use and portability, the non-tracker function of the MSM Rotator has been left off, greatly simplifying the operation of the new tracker.

    3. The NOMAD is focused on one function, star tracking.   (NOMAD does not have timelapse mode)

  4. Reduced size and weight.  A foremost feature of our trackers is portability.

    1. Our users take our trackers with them even when backpacking to some of the most remote areas of the world.

    2. We worked to make storing and transporting the tracker even easier so you'll always want to have it with you when traveling.

    3. The tracker is called NOMAD for a reason; it is designed to travel with you wherever you go.

The Best Portable Star Tracking Solution for Everyone

For novices, we want it to be the best easy-to-use star tracker;

For experienced astrophotographers, we want it to be the most travel-friendly tracker.

But, if users want the old Timelapse functionality, then we may be able to provide pre-orders of the MSM rotator. We’re sorry, but we can not strengthen the star tracker ability and time-lapse ability at the same time. The hardware requirements for improving both of these functions are contradictory.

a very good small size tracker!!!!

I am new to astrophotography and I discovered the MSM Rotator in a night photography magazine.
I ordered it with the laser accessories for polar alignment, it is easy to use once aligned with the pole star.
I use it with different lenses, it is a very good small tracker that can be easily transported.
I recommend it!!!!!!

Great entry level tracker

This was my first tracker and i love it. I have had no issues and with a proper polar alignment i have stuck a 420mm lens and dslr on it for 45 second exposures. I wouldn't recomend going much longer than that though. Overall, keep and eye on the weight of your gear and it will track very nicely.

Compact and sturdy

I am just beginning my Nomad adventure and so far, it has lived up to everything I had heard. It is compact, sturdy mechanically, and capable. I have also added the Z-wedge and will be purchasing (or getting for Christmas) a wedge to help with my endeavors....

NOMAD Kit is great

Wow as a beginner this kit is really easy to work with. Very cool

Completely as advertised.

works exactly as predicted. Solid constructions and handled my Canon R5 plus a 70-200mm pretty well; although I would be afraid to go any heavier. I’ve played with several of the 1st and 2nd generation small portable trackers and this one is the winner.

Very good

Managed tracking of almost 3KG with Sigma 40mm. Surprisingly good.

MSM Nomad

I found quite a few poor quality elements with the device. The screw in locking mechanism for the rotor often keeps coming loose and has to be retighten. The V plate has to be tightened down so tightly that it almost impossible to readjust after its setup. Both of which are particularly troublesome after one has already gone through the process of setting everything up. Collectively it negates the fact that it’s a small and “lightweight” device.. It’s as if it still in the prototype phase..
