How Does MSM Light Pollution Filter Work?

This light pollution filter is made of a special glass called didymium glass, with multi coating

This filter can significantly reduce the transmission of light from sodium vapor and mercury vapor lamps, which are mainly located in the range from 575nm to 600nm wavelengths, please refer to the chart below. Sodium vapor and mercury vapor lamps, commonly used in street lighting and industrial lighting, emit yellow and orange lights from the ground to the sky, ruining the nightscape views and pictures. So light with wavelengths from 575nm to 600nm is the main cause of light pollution.

This filter is able to greatly block the wavelengths from 575nm to 600nm, helping the camera get the correct color of the night sky and landscape. With the help of the filter, the images with the right color can also save a lot of bother from after-processing.

The filter does not add blue color or any other colors to the images, it just stops the wavelengths of the polluting lights. The contrast from the sky to the ground will be enhanced, and the true and beautiful colors of the landscape will be restored.

FAQ

Q:

What does "all adapters" mean in the light pollution filter on sale?

A:

For the Option" 82mm Filter + All Adapters", it will come with one 82mm filter and 8 adapters- 49mm+52mm+ 55mm +58mm + 62mm + 67mm +72mm + 77mm.

Q:

Usually using light pollution filters requires about 1 f stop of increased exposure. What is the difference on exposure time when using this filter?

A:

The filter removed the yellow light pollution color cast but the rest of the image wasn't noticeably darker so I would say certainly less than one stop.

One filter for all DSLR astro photography?

This filter and the optional adaptor kit mean that I have a good light pollution filter that fits all my lenses except for an ultra-wide fast one with a bulbous front element. Although I live in a rural village, this is a Bortle Class 5 location now (it used to be Bortle 4) and I have new urban connurbations within 10Km that severely impact the night sky. As much of this is from street lighting, I wonder at the public and private waste of energy to light the night sky, particularly as the UK has to import 15% of its electricity!

I have been seeking Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS which, for anyone living above latitude 50ºN, has been a low early evening object in our southwestern to western skies. Having found it, it certainly was not bright enough for viewing with the naked eye due to light pollution even when using any reasonable magnification. I fitted this Dydimium filter to my Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 lens and managed several reasonable shots of it.

Obviously any filter will reduce the overall level of light reaching your camera sensor and I would suggest that you add +0.66 EV if using a full frame camera (such as my Nikon Z6ii) or +1.33 EV if using an APC-S (cropped) sensor. This avoids increasing the exposure time as that could introduce blurring of stars that were previously sharp.

Works perfectly. Really changed my photos.

I bought the kit with all adapters. The filter is great and I have had no trouble using it on various thread sizes. It's great to only buy the one filter! I see a noticeable difference in my photos.

Never recieved the filter

I ordered the filter back in early December 2023 and still to this day haven't received it. I reached out to Support and haven't heard back. Reached out on a social media which I shouldn't have had to do. At this point, just want a refund and loved this site but if its going to be like this. I'm thinking twice about ordering anything else.

This filter makes a difference

I shoot most of my Milkyway photos in Joshua tree, ca and there is a visible light pollution from the nearest town. This filter helped to neutralize the pollution. It’s good to have it in your arsenal.

Works like a charm

Definitely cuts down on light pollution. Works in most cases to reduce the amount of light pollution from almost any area. Nothings as good as a completely dark location, but this helps.
