Installation Tip

Eric’s phone holder is made of plastic, so please avoid applying excessive force as it may cause damage.

For installation, we recommend first removing the red cap on the back of the NOMAD, then sliding it into the holder and gently clicking it into place.

As we all know, polar alignment in the Southern Hemisphere can be tricky. Thanks to the clever and creative design by Eric Wilkes, the process becomes far more intuitive and much easier. We’re now working to make this phone holder accessible to more people.

The holder is simple to use in both the Southern and Northern Hemispheres.

Notices / Warnings

Phone sensor differences: Due to variations in phone compass and inclinometer performance, tracking accuracy may vary. Most users will achieve excellent astro-landscape results, though some phones may perform slightly differently.
Remove smart devices during alignment: As tested by Eric, please remove your smartwatch and do not mount your camera on the ball head until after polar alignment — these can affect compass accuracy.
Material notes: We chose ABS for its durability during shipping and daily use. However, ABS naturally has a more textured, gritty surface compared to CNC-machined metal. Please handle it gently and avoid applying excessive force to prevent possible damage. Please note that we do not provide replacements if the holder arrives intact but breaks during daily use.

MSM - Nomad

A well engineered product that take pain out of the polar alignment process. With the right add-on, you don't even need to see the pole star to align — works in both the northern and southern hemisphere. It's also a very portable and lightweight product and easy to carry on a hiking trip.

Easy Aligning every time

Eric's phone holder slides onto my MSM Nomad perfectly and supports my iphone for easy polar alignment using Photopills Spot Stars, super fast and accurate. The tray is night glow green and lightweight, well worth the $. Big thumbs up!

Eric Wilkes phone holder - Does the job better than anything else I've tried.

Leaves me nervous that I'm going to knock the setup resulting in my phone heading for Polaris via the hard stuff between me and the aiming point. I'll probably use a retaining loop of bungee cord.

I would love to give you a review on all the gear I have purchased from MSM but with work commitments and cloudy weather every time I'm home, I have not been able to try out my gear. I am getting so frustrated as I only get 4 days off a month and its always been bad weather when I'm home. Hopefully as spring arrives the weather will be better. However, everything I have purchased appears to be top quality.

Eric Wilkes’ 3D Phone Holder for the Nomad is a game changer for quick, accurate polar alignments for the Southern and Northern Hemispheres. Paired with apps especially like PS Align Pro’s latest update or Photopills and SkySafari Pro - alignment’s are fast without the need for lasers or polar scopes (although they can still be used for checking).

The phone holder works great and appears very sturdy. It works great for SkySafari & PhotoPills. However, I like Polar Scope Align Pro better than either of those, and this holder does not work with it. Eric Wilkes designed holders that do work with PS Align Pro. I hope you will sell those holders soon

Nice accessory but NOT durable

First time using it in the field and it breaks! One of the tabs that stabilizes it on the NOMAD broke when I was sliding it off. So disappointing considering the cost.

This 3D phone holder works very well! It securely attaches to the NOMAD to allow a simple mount to astro align the Nomad. Be careful if you move the tripod as the phone in the holder is not strapped down. Very worth while to use . David.
